zero, zeroing
Zeroing refers to the procedure by which a firearm's POA (point-of-aim) is matched to the POI (point-of-impact). Once a firearm has been "zeroed" at a particular range, the bullet will (under ideal circumstances) hit exactly where the sights are aimed. Sights are usually set to a close-range default zero, and then adjusted upwards to compensate for gravity on long-range shots. If the sights are not returned to the default zero before a shot is taken at a closer target, the firearm's POI will be higher than the POA.
Handgun sights are usually zeroed around 10-30 meters and do not often require adjustment, as few handgun shots are taken beyond 50 meters and most cartridges do not experience noticeable bullet drop before 100 meters or so.
Rifle sights are generally zeroed according to the shooter's preference, based on the range that most shooting takes place. However, many militaries set their rifle sights to a "battle zero" of about 200-300 meters. A rifle with this battle zero will score a hit on a human-sized target without adjustment out to roughly 400 meters, provided that the soldier aims at the midsection of the target as they have been trained. Because of this, owners of military surplus firearms must remember that their surplus rifle will need to have the sights adjusted in order to take highly precise shots at under 300 meters.
