Mosin-Nagant Internals and Conveniences
Mosin-Nagants are very popular, and like most popular guns, there are truckloads of small aftermarket parts perfectly priced for the casual online shopper. Some of these parts are useful, some of them are pretty, and some are wastes of money. One and all, we've listed them below and organized alphabetically by manufacturer. Aim Sports Recoil Pad - This buttpad is hard black rubber (sometimes seen in brown) and was originally intended to come with a tube of rubber softener to be applied by the end user, however, this rubber softener has not been included with the buttpad for some time. As it is, recoil reduction over the steel buttplate is barely adequate , although many shooters report that completely drilling out all the holes provides additional comfort. Many shooters also report a strong and unpleasant chemical odor that takes several weeks to dissipate. This buttpad is available from several manufacturers online, likely meaning that there is one factory in China selling to multiple distributors. This pad is the only Mosin-Nagant pad with bolt-on installation, making it a popular choice despite lackluster performance.

Brass Stacker Cocking Piece Pull Ring - A bolt-on cocking piece pull ring that makes the Mosin-Nagant safety much more comfortable to operate, and has a hole to allow access to the slotted end of the firing pin (see here for a full teardown and rebuild of the Mosin-Nagant bolt). This pull ring attaches with a brass set screw that will not easily mar the cocking piece, making this the only cocking piece pull ring that does not permanently modify the host Mosin-Nagant. This pull ring is available in either a black oxide or polished finish.
$45 - $50
Brass Stacker Front Sight Adapter Band - This adapter band allows the shooter to keep their front sight after shortening their M91/30's barrel. Band adapters are available to sit at 25.5", 23.5", 21.5", 19.5", and 17.5", each machined to place the sight at the correct height for that barrel length (the M91/30 barrel has a gradual but continuous taper).
$20 - $30
Brass Stacker Bayonet Handle - A machined steel handle that fits the M91/30 bayonet, allowing it to be used as a makeshift knife.
$35 - $40
Brass Stacker Bayonet Adapter - A machined steel adapter that allows you to fit the M91/30 bayonet to a length of steel conduit tubing to use as a makeshift spear.
$20 - $25
Brass Stacker Leather Buttstock Pouch/Comb Riser - A hand-sewn, made-in-USA leather buttstock pouch with a pocket for small tools, space for five rounds of 7.62x54R, and an integrated comb riser to elevate the shooter's head for use with optics. Many buttstock pouches will fit the Mosin-Nagant, but this one is sized specifically for the factory M91/30 stock and has an unusual, old-school leather appeal.

Max Shepard Cocking Piece Pull Ring Modification - Max Shepard can add a pull ring to your rifle's cocking knob, much like a Swiss K-31. The pull ring makes the Mosin-Nagant safety much easier and more comfortable to operate, but obstructs access to the slotted end of the firing pin (see here for a full teardown and rebuild of the Mosin-Nagant bolt). The fee also includes a refinishing service with your choice or high-polish, satin, or flat finishes.
$20
Max Shepard Cocking Piece Pull Ring - A replacement surplus cocking piece for the Mosin-Nagant with an added pull-ring, much like a Swiss K-31. Note that swapping out the cocking piece of your Mosin-Nagant means the witness marks that show when the firing pin is at the appropriate depth will no longer be applicable (see here for a full teardown and rebuild of the Mosin-Nagant bolt). The pull ring makes the Mosin-Nagant safety much easier and more comfortable to operate, but obstructs access to the slotted end of the firing pin. MosinPlus Muzzle Brakes - A bolt-on muzzle brake for the Mosin-Nagant that wraps around the front sight and uses set-screws to keep tight to the barrel. Versions are available to fit factory M91/30s, shortened M91/30s, and M44 carbines.

NcSTAR M44 Muzzle Brake - A bolt-on muzzle brake for the M44 carbine Mosin-Nagant that wraps around the front sight and uses set-screws to keep tight to the barrel. Reviews are questionable, with some reports of the muzzle brake becoming misaligned by vibration from firing and bullets striking the brake.

Rock Solid Ind. Bedding Pillars - If you aren't sure what bedding pillars are, check out this article on bedding techniques. These bedding pillars are sized specifically for the Mosin-Nagant's action bolts. The price is somewhat handsome considering a few minutes with a hacksaw, ruler, and some tube stock could produce a very similar product. However, these pillars are nicely finished and pre-fit.
$10 - $15
Rock Solid Ind. Action Bolts - These action bolts have hex heads, rather than the flathead screwdriver head of the factory bolts, so they're much easier to tighten without stripping or spalling. Additionally, these bolts are cut from good steel and then heat treated, so they are as-hard or harder than the factory bolts.
$10 - $15
Rock Solid Ind. Trigger Shoe - Trigger shoes are an old idea that doesn't get a lot of attention, but the basic idea is that a larger trigger surface feels easier to pull. This trigger shoe looks like aluminum in-the-white (bare metal) but actually has a clear anodized finish, and is available in two models to fit either the factory trigger or the Timney aftermarket trigger.
$10 - $15
Rock Solid Ind. Stainless Steel Firing Pin Spring - A replacement firing pin spring made from stainless steel. This spring is heavier (more powerful) than the factory spring, but exactly how much heavier is not specified. Heavier firing pin springs offer a faster lock time and ensure the firing pin strikes the primer with sufficient force to ignite, which can be a problem for rifles with damaged or corroded firing pin springs. However, heavier firing pin springs also mean more force is required to open the bolt.

SmithSights Shim Kit (accurizing kit) - A shim kit to shim bed the action securely into the stock and pressure-bed the barrel. This is an easy, no-mess alternative to glass-bedding.
$18 - $22
SmithSights Finnish-modified Magazine - The Finnish M39 improved on the Russian M91/30 Mosin-Nagant in a number of ways, and one of those ways was an extra dimple in the magazine to promote smoother feeding. SmithSights offers a surplus magazine modified with the same dimple.

Wolff Blitzschnell Firing Pin Spring - Like all Wolff springs, these springs are made from Wolff's proprietary spring steel. Wolff offers Mosin-Nagant springs in two poundages, 24lb (14% heavier than factory) and 30lb (43% heavier than factory). Heavier firing pin springs offer a faster lock time and ensure the firing pin strikes the primer with sufficient force to ignite, which can be a problem for rifles with damaged or corroded firing pin springs. However, heavier firing pin springs also mean more force is required to open the bolt.
