Saiga Handguards/Forearms
The hardware on a factory Saiga forearm is somewhat unique, and cannot mount traditional AK-pattern handguards from the factory. In order to mount AK handguards, you will need to first install a new gas tube and lower handguard brackets like those found on military AK-pattern rifles. This is more expensive than it sounds, because AK handguard brackets are too small to fit over the AK's front sight tower (normally they are installed before the front sight tower is pinned in place). Thus, you need to buy a specialized bracket designed for Saiga rifles, and they aren't especially cheap. For gas tube and bracket combined, you're lucky to get away for under $60, and that's before you've even bought the handguard.
Alternatively, Saiga-specific replacement handguards are available from several manufacturers. These handguards are drop-in units for Saiga rifles, but will not fit normal AK-pattern rifles without modification. Saiga handguards don't look like conventional AK handguards, but they avoid the need for brackets and gas tubes, and they're available in many colors and rail configurations.
Both AK and Saiga-style handguards are available in a variety of price ranges and materials, and most are intended to provide rails for mounting forward grips, flashlights, and other accessories. If you do not intend to add accessories to your Saiga, there is very little reason to replace the handguard.
See below for a limited but representative slice of the Saiga and AK handguard market.
